Daniel Turner – The Lustrous Relapse
Reception for the Artist – Thursday, July 24th 7-9pm
The Lustrous Relapse
New York City, NY: Union Gallery is pleased to announce The Lustrous Relapse, a solo
exhibition and site specific installation of works by Daniel Turner.
Over the past Decade Daniel Turner has produced a series of works which embody
spirituality, seduction, madness, and the sublime. The current show is composed of several
recent works spanning a broad range of materials and mediums. This installation includes
painting, photography, sculpture, and the petroleum encased vinyl piece, Swan Dive Jack
Knife. An alluring work made by encasing various substances such as tar, lithium grease,
and antiseptics between sheets of transparent vinyl. The surface of the painting remains
reflective and eloquent, yet upon a closer inspection reveals a noxious interior, inducing an
apprehensive seduction. Also included in these works are the intimate reflective mylar and
glass sculptures which correspond with the large painting “Slip you into a comma dance you
around this heat” distorting polarities between motion and the motionless, the severe and the
serene.
Daniel Turner was born in Portsmouth, VA and received his BFA in painting from the San
Francisco Art Institute. He has been in numerous solo and group exhibitions such as The
Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk VA, Hermitage Foundation Museum, Norfolk VA, Gregory
Lind Gallery, San Francisco CA, Walter McBean Gallery, San Francisco CA, Boulevard es
Brezsnyev Gallery, Budapest HU, and USSA Fine Arts, Brooklyn NY. Turner is the current
recipient of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts award for 2008.
He currently lives and works in New York City.
